Hi, welcome to EawArt. Please allow me to introduce myself, I am a Singaporean but I am now residing in China with my wife. If you are wondering where exactly in China, it is at Rizhao, Shandong Province. This place has been endorsed by United Nations as one of the most suited place for human living.
Unlike Singapore which is hot and humid all year round, Rizhao has four seasons and an average temperature of about 20C and it is a small beach resort city with about 70km of beach line at the East Coast of China. To an artist the change of seasons offer much more opportunity and variety in painting.
I am able to do both Western and Chinese brush paintings and I have been painting for more than 20 years now. However, Western oil, water color and pastel painting styles are closer to my heart because I love colors. Chinese brush painting is more zen liked, you will need another state of mind to appreciate that. I will switch between the two depends on my state of mind.
I prefer to paint from real live or do out door painting. On the other hand Chinese painting mostly paint from the image in ones mind. Both has its strenght and weaknesses but to me because of my ability to do both I can often cover the weakness with the strength of the other. However, having said that there are lots of commonality between Western and Eastern paintings in terms of painting technique and theory.
